Where you stay for the Honolulu Marathon matters more than it does for a lot of races, mostly because of how thoroughly race-morning road closures reshape getting around the city. For almost everyone, the answer is some part of Waikiki — the real decision is which part.
Why Waikiki is the default choice
Waikiki sits within reach of both the race's start area near Ala Moana and its finish at Kapiolani Park, which is a real advantage on a morning when driving anywhere near the course is difficult. Staying here also puts you close to the marathon's free race-morning shuttle service, which traditionally runs from the Honolulu Zoo area in eastern Waikiki to the Ala Moana start in the hours before the 5 a.m. gun.
Near the finish vs. near the start
Hotels on the eastern end of Waikiki, closer to Kapiolani Park — think the stretch near the Honolulu Zoo and along Kalakaua Avenue toward Diamond Head — tend to work well for both ends of the race: they're close to the shuttle pickup for the start and a short walk from the finish, which matters a great deal once you've just run 26.2 miles in the heat. Hotels closer to Ala Moana put you within walking distance of the start line itself, cutting out the shuttle ride, but leave you needing a plan — a walk, a rideshare, or public transit — to get back across town after finishing. Neither choice is wrong; it comes down to whether you'd rather simplify the morning-of logistics or the post-race walk home, and most runners weight the post-race trip more heavily.
Booking early for race weekend
Race weekend falls during a genuinely busy stretch on Oahu's hotel calendar — mid-December combines marathon travel with the broader winter holiday travel season, and rooms in the preferred Waikiki zones fill up well in advance. If you know you're running, it's worth booking your hotel long before you'd normally lock in race travel, rather than waiting until closer to the date.
Alternatives beyond Waikiki
If Waikiki is fully booked or outside your budget, areas around Ala Moana Center are a reasonable alternative that keep you close to the start, though you'll want to plan your post-race transportation back more deliberately since you won't simply be able to walk it. Wherever you stay, confirm your route to the start and back in advance — race-morning closures can make even a short trip confusing if you haven't mapped it out ahead of time, and hotels don't always provide their own race-day shuttle even when a neighboring property does.
