Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend isn't one race — it's four races stacked across four consecutive days, threaded through Walt Disney World Resort in the middle of Florida's winter. For a runner outside the runDisney world, the lineup can look chaotic: a 5K, a 10K, a half marathon, a full marathon, plus two big optional challenges layered on top. In practice it follows a very consistent shape year after year, and once you understand that shape, planning around it gets a lot easier.

The four-day lineup

Each Marathon Weekend runs in the same order every year: the 5K goes off first, the 10K follows the next morning, the half marathon runs the day after that, and the full marathon closes out the weekend. Every race starts in the very early morning, well before the surrounding theme parks open to day guests, which is what allows the course to run through sections of the parks themselves. Each race can be registered individually — you don't have to run all four to run any one of them, and plenty of runners only sign up for the half or the full. Age minimums scale with distance too: the 5K allows participants as young as five, while the marathon and both challenges require runners to be 18 or older, worth knowing if you're planning a family trip around a mix of distances.

Goofy and Dopey: the challenges

Layered over the four individual races are two official multi-race challenges. Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge combines the half marathon and full marathon into a single back-to-back achievement over two consecutive days. The Dopey Challenge goes further, requiring all four races across all four days for a combined 48.6 miles. Both have their own dedicated guides on this site with the full rules, medal counts, and training considerations — worth reading if a single race doesn't sound like enough.

The expo and bib pickup

Before any of the actual running, everyone registered for the weekend has to stop by the runDisney Health & Fitness Expo at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex to collect a bib, participant shirt, and clear gear-check bag in person — there's generally no way to have it mailed or picked up on your behalf. The expo runs across multiple days ahead of the first race and doubles as a vendor floor and merchandise shop, so budget more time than you'd expect, especially if you're trying to avoid the busiest hours.

It's more than a race weekend

Because the whole event sits inside a Disney resort vacation, most runners build park time around the racing — arriving a day or two early for the expo, then adding recovery days afterward to actually use the park tickets they bought. That means Marathon Weekend planning blends two different kinds of logistics: race-day details like transportation, corrals, and fueling, and vacation details like dining reservations, park hours, and hotel choice. Treating it purely as a race trip, or purely as a Disney vacation, tends to under-plan one half of the weekend. If you'd like to see what else is on the calendar around the state, RaceRove's Florida race guide lists the other Florida races on the site.

Planning the weekend around your race

A few practical notes apply no matter which race or challenge you're running. Register the moment the window opens — popular distances, and the Dopey Challenge especially, can sell out within minutes. Book hotels and flights around the announced race-weekend dates rather than waiting for a confirmed bib, since travel often needs to be locked in before registration even opens. And don't schedule anything demanding for the day right after your last race: recovery from an early-morning, multi-mile weekend in Florida humidity takes longer than most runners expect, even for the shorter distances.
